
Who said chickens don't eat meat? Chickens are omnivores. They eat huge amounts of insects and other high-protein foods. They also LOVE meat when they can get it. I once watched a flock of chickens find a nest of baby mice and proceed to devour them, chasing each other around the pasture to grab the mice.
In a commercial diet, the protein comes mostly from soybeans, and sometimes from fish meal.
