Why haven't any of the Presidents of United States of America been re-elected to non-consecutive terms?

It's not for a lack of trying.

Former Democratic President Martin Van Buren (President 1837-41) ran again unsuccessfully, this time as a Free Soil party candidate in 1848.

Former Whig  President Millard Fillmore (President 1850-53) ran again unsuccessfully, this time with a variety of political parties (Whig and the American Party--better known as the No-Nothing Party) in 1856.

Former Republican President Ulysses S Grant (President 1869-77) nearly won his party's Presidential nomination for what would have been an unprecedented third term in 1880.

Former Republican President Theodore Roosevelt (President 1901-09) ran a surprisingly strong but ultimately unsuccessful race--this time as a Progressive in 1912.

Of course the one successful former President to regain the White House was Grover Cleveland (President 1885-89) won a second non-consecutive term in 1892.
