What are your most controversial or unpopular opinions?
- The idea that every student can learn is false. Inherent mental ability, motivation, and personal disposition are far more influential than teachers, differentiation, instructional methods, or resources in deciding whether or not a child will be academically successful.
- Summer vacation is a sweet perk of teaching. Most teachers will come up with a litany of reasons it’s not a vacation, and swear that they work just as hard during the summer—writing plans and going to conferences and professional development trainings—it’s like they don’t get a break at all! We need to perpetuate this idea because society already thinks teachers have it too easy (we don’t), but this “summer is just as much work” nonsense is ridiculous. Sure, I write lesson plans and go to conferences during the summer. I stay a week after school ends and go back a week early, but honestly, summer vacation is awesome, and I definitely do not work a fraction as hard as I do during the school year.
- You are only valuable for what you provide to others. No one cares that you’re a nice person or that you try hard. If you want to get anywhere in life, you have to produce things for other people. People need things, and you will not make friends, find a spouse, get a job, or get a promotion unless you provide something to deserve that attention, that relationship, that job, or that money. You have to put effort in—effort beyond what your “personality” offers.
- All people are self-serving. No one is truly altruistic. If you feel good after doing something good, then you’re still getting a benefit from your kind act. That’s self-serving. When in doubt, see #3.
- Being a parent is miserable much of the time. I love my daughter with all my heart, and I’ve had moments of pure, overwhelming joy and love for her that I’ve literally never felt for any other human being in my life. But most of the time, it’s a drain on every mental, physical, emotional, and financial resource in my life.
- Cheese is awful. It’s curdled, moldy milk. What is wrong with you people?
