You'll always hear people tell you to avoid fights. The bigger person is the one who avoids them altogether or walks away from one.
But let's say that none of the above go well for you, and the next thing you know, you're stuck in a confrontation with an adversary who's going to rob you, hurt you, or worse. If running away isn't an option, and the only way to proceed is via engagement, then this can potentially give you the upper-hand:
Say something completely random.
It doesn't even have to make sense. In fact, it's probably better if it doesn't make any sense at all. You could simply look up at the sky and say something like, "Does it look like it's going to snow soon?" (a similar line was actually used successfully in the past during a hostage situation on the edge of a skyscraper)
Your goal is to be so directly out of context that your opponent looks something like this:
And as soon as your opponent is stuck in that very brief period of bewilderment, you go for the first strike. And try to hit a critical target (e.g. neck, groin, etc.). You have one shot to put you on top; don't waste it.
However, an important caveat: only do something like this if you are seriously in danger. As in, losing this (involuntary) fight may cost you some limbs or your life, for instance. Don't end up killing or seriously wounding someone when it isn't necessary. You would only be greatly screwing yourself over in the latter case.
