What (trivial) knowledge might save your life one day?

The Bystander Effect. If you don’t know about this effect, it might save your life learning about it. The Bystander Effect is a diffusion of responsibility of bystanders. When someone is standing on the side of a robbery or a fight, they will not interfere the more people are around, expecting them to help.

When you are in a fight, are being robbed, or worse, do not expect others to help you. They will want to avoid it. Instead, look them in the eye, ask for their help, specifically direct it at them. That removes the feeling of anyone else being able to help as you asked it specifically of them.

Fights end on stamina more than anything else. In a fight, whether it be in a bar, or for life/death, it is all about stamina. The one who can still do something at the end wins. This means that most fights end very fast.

This is why throwing the first punch results in a huge advantage. When someone wants to harm you, being the first to act gives you the edge. Most fights end before they really start. SIDENOTE: Know that you will get hurt in a longer fight.

A pen is a great self-defense weapon. Keeping a pen close by, in your pocket, is a great weapon. If used correctly you can inflict more pain than your opponent, ending the fight sooner than later.

People will panic when close to drowning. People that are close to drowning will panic, which may result in them dragging you down as well. Instead of going close to them it is better to grab a stick, or another object they can grab onto, to tell them to calm down first, or even to knock them out or wait until they are unconscious before going in.

Take it slow. Most of the mistakes happen because we want to be fast. We want to go to other places, are in a rush and run amok. This is how a lot of accidents happen; someone is in a hurry and doesn’t pay enough attention.

When you realize you are in a rush remember this: The 5 minutes you might be late could save your life. Is it really worth it to save those 5 minutes? Sometimes it might be, but if it isn’t then take a deep breath and slow down.
