For my children, it became acceptable for them to listen to adult conversation upon their birth. It became acceptable for them to be involved when they became verbal. And they were patiently taught the basics of social interaction in an age appropriate fashion, so they learned not to interrupt.
They were not taught notions such as “children should be seen but not heard” or that their contributions were less worthy of respect than adults, because I think that's silly.
