Sent to a Hong Kong prison at the age of 64 after having served 42 years in the police force.
My Dad spent the next 3 years of his life in a foreign lands prison system. Alone and without help, all for being implicated in a crime he was accused of being involved in by merely being in the same company of a white collar criminal when the arrest had happened. One wrong dinner date, and it cost 3 years of his life.
He watched his cell mate die in the same room as him while no one came to help. He lived amongst murderers, gangsters and criminals of all sorts who never spoke his language.
He made it out on sheer determination. Beating all the odds against him at his age and health condition. Fighting asthma cause they wouldn't medicate him. Learning the language, making friends with the kind of people he has spent most of his life sending to the place he now had to survive. He told me he wanted to see his sons again. He wouldn't be beat that easy.
Cliche aside, he really truly is the strongest man I've ever had the honor of sharing the same dinner table with.
