30 jobs in the PR and marketing world

Before throwing your graduation cap in the air, you’ve probably tossed your hat into the job ring.

Although finding the perfect organization to start your career is a top priority, discovering a city that provides opportunities and suits your personal needs should be right up there, too.

Sure, sometimes you have to pay your dues and work in less desirable locales, but if you can’t afford to pay your bills or the social scene has you bored to tears, it might not be worth taking the position.

SmartAsset’s study, “The best cities for new college grads in 2018” provides insight for deciding where to target your search for a location with ample job opportunities, a good cost of living and a desirable social atmosphere.

To come up with these rankings, the researchers analyzed data from the Census Bureau’s 2016 1-Year American Community Survey, Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Local Area Unemployment Statistics, and Indeed.com Job Search API.

These factors went into the findings:

To measure a city’s job score, we looked at overall unemployment rates, unemployment rates for those with a bachelor’s degree, average earnings for college graduates and the number of job listings on Indeed. For affordability, we looked at cost of living and monthly median rent costs. To measure fun, we looked at the concentration of entertainment and dining establishments, population aged between 20 and 29, the average rating for bars in the area and the average rating for restaurants in the area.

Ohio nabbed the first two spots, with Columbus and Cincinnati claiming Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. The two cities swapped positions from the previous year’s list.

Columbus’ low unemployment rate for those with degrees (1.5 percent), below-average cost of living, offering of job opportunities, and large population of 20- to 29-year-olds all factored into its earning the top designation.

These cities made the top 10:

  1. Columbus, Ohio
  2. Cincinnati
  3. Nashville, Tennessee
  4. Pittsburgh
  5. Milwaukee
  6. San Antonio
  7. Omaha, Nebraska
  8. Louisville, Kentucky
  9. St. Louis
  10. Indianapolis
