Hair-raising events promote men’s health in ‘Movember’

Seeing more mustaches lately? Happy Movember.

Organizations around the world are encouraging men (and women) to sport their mustaches. The Movember Foundation has signed up more than 5 million “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas” since 2003, as well as funding some 1,200 men’s health projects through its fundraising efforts.

Look at how communicators and organizations are supporting Movember and its related health efforts:

This page on the Audi website features a brief video showcasing different kinds of mustaches, from pencil to porno, as well as one fabulous “octopus” mustache and beard. The site packs a marketing message into its promotion:

Movember is a month dedicated to “changing the face of men’s health.” By growing a moustache each year, men raise awareness about preventing cancer and other diseases. Shaping and styling your facial hair is an opportunity to be creative and express yourself—things that also epitomize the Audi Q2.

Events

City Star Brewing in Berthoud, Colorado, is hosting a fundraising event featuring music, a food truck and a contest: “[R]ock your best mustache (or beard), impress our panel of judges and take home a special prize package full of goodies!”

Categories in the contest:

1. Au natural—no styling aids, some things just come easy
2. Freestyle Mo—bring on the styling aids
3. Size matters—grab the yardstick, looking for the longest beard
4. More than a Mo—most stylish beard, au natural … or not
5. Lady ’stache—anything goes, ladies!

In addition, City Star will donate $1 per beer sold all that day to the Movember Foundation.

Indianapolis radio station 1075/1070 The Fan is hosting a “Movember Tailgate Party” with MashCraft Brewing Co. In addition to featuring on-air personalities, a beard contest, free food and gift cards, event organizers are offering participants a free health screening from Franciscan Health—and the first 100 to do so will get a free growler of beer.

Planning your event

Interested in planning your own Movember event? The website for Rightpoint, a nationwide digital strategy organization focused on customer experience, has a five-point checklist on how to do it. In three years, Rightpoint raised over $12,000 for the Movember Foundation. Event organizer Erik Abderhalden advises:

Movember technically has rules, but rules are meant to be broken. I encourage you to make a set of rules that fit your company and a schedule that accommodates Thanksgiving.

When I talk about creating your own rules, I speak of creating rules that accommodate your company's culture. While you may want to be a stickler and enforce a cleanshaven policy effective at midnight November 1, keeping track of details like that across a company is like herding cats.

Communicators, what’s your organization growing this month?
