The success of your content hinges upon whether people can find it.
Internet denizens are beholden to the great and powerful Google, which gobbles up more than 80 percent of global search engine market share. When Google speaks, content creators should listen—and pivot accordingly.

To help you do so, Miller Media Management has created an infographic that sheds light on nine important updates Google has made public. Highlights include:
- Initially launched in 2011, “Panda” was unleashed to chew up “low-quality” websites and crack down on “content farms.” It’s been updated and tweaked over the years to hunt for duplicate content, plagiarism and keyword stuffing.
- “Penguin” was rolled out in April 2012. This update slides around the internet on its belly, hunting for sites packed with fishy links. It dives for spam, too, so make sure your content is useful, practical and pure as driven snow.
- Google’s “Pirate” algorithm update set sail in 2014 to catch online corsairs and marauders who post pirated content. Copyright infringement can still get your ranking thrown overboard.
- “Hummingbird” flits about, clamping down on sites that game the SEO system through keyword stuffing and other bird-brain tactics. Write naturally, for your audience. Writing for robots is for the birds.
- “Fred” is Google’s latest update. Released in March 2017, this tweak snoops around for content stuffed with affiliate links and advertisements.
Google has been known to tinker with its search algorithm up to 600 times per year, so it’s crucial to stay tuned. Your SEO depends on it.
