Uber CEO: ‘We’ve got things wrong along the way’

Could this be a new PR direction for Uber?

The company’s new chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, recently apologized following London’s announcement that it would withdraw Uber’s license to operate in the city.

The news from London’s transportation regulator called Uber “not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license,” thus issuing—at least for the moment—a death blow to the company in the European hub.

Here’s the full version of Khosrowshahi’s open letter to Londoners, which was published in the city’s Evening Standards:

The letter is a stark change in tone from the communications tactics that Uber’s founder and former chief executive, Travis Kalanick, has employed.

Known for his brashness and bravado, Kalanick’s regulation-averse style was far less conciliatory. Not even a month into the job, this is Khosrowshahi’s first crack at handling a crisis for a company that has been at the center of a few heated situations over the past several months.

Khosrowshahi, who previously served as Expedia’s chief executive, seems to be actively working to correct any damage done by the former regime, and his efforts might already be working. London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, responded positively to his apology:

With Uber’s deadline for getting out of London just a few days away, we’ll see whether Khosrowshahi can persuade the Transport for London officials to allow it to stay and operate on more friendly terms.

What do you think of Khosrowshahi’s apology, along with the directions change to Uber’s executive communications strategy?
