The season of giving is upon us, and Thursday will be a day to honor altruism.
Originally organized by Douglas Freeman, Nov. 15 has been recognized as National Philanthropy Day (NPD) since 1986 when President Ronald Reagan signed the proclamation.
According to the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the organization behind the national day of generosity, NDP celebrates the selfless efforts of individuals and organizations doing their philanthropic part and inspiring others to get involved, and it encourages everyone to reflect on the benefits of giving.
AFP chapters across North America hold events to recognize these champions of charity, victors of volunteerism, guardians of giving back and knights of nonprofits. (For the less dramatic, they salute those people and organizations doing their darnedest to make the world a better place.)
