The Attorney General of the United States is duty bound to defend the Constitution and to zealously advance the interest of the United States within the boundaries of the law. The Attorney General is also obliged not to defend an unconstitutional or illegal action both by the Constitution and by the canon of ethics to which all attorneys are subscribed.
Things that the Attorney General is not required to do include mindlessly following the dictates of the President, and defending the President's orders even when they appear to be illegal. The Attorney General is not a slave to the President, and the loyalty an Attorney General owes is to the Constitution and the country, not the President.
She was doing her duty under the law and the Constitution. It was the President's prerogative to dismiss her, but until he did she was performing her duties as required by law. There was no reason for her to resign.
