30 jobs in the PR and marketing world

Some people may be feeling added stress the day after the tumultuous 2018 midterm elections.

It’s fitting, then, that Nov. 7 is National Stress Awareness Day.

The International Stress Management Association (ISMA), which runs the awareness campaign, is also celebrating its first International Stress Awareness Week.

Technology’s impact on our daily lives is the focal point of this year’s theme, “Does Hi-Tech Cause Hi-Stress?”

It dives deeper into the initiative on its website:

Our theme for 2018, Does Hi-Tech Cause Hi-Stress? , will look at two sides of technology: on the one hand, the stressful effects of the 24/7 lifestyle that technology has brought, and on the other, the positive contribution that technology can make, helping us manage our lives better. There is no doubt that technology impacts on all our lives, and it is appropriate that ISMA is involved in a debate about the positive and the adverse effects it can have, and how we can use technology to our advantage.

The ISMA website features resources and events aimed at minimizing the stigma associated with mental health issues, and it offers ways for people to reduce the stress in their lives.

Though many elements affect our stress levels, few things cause us more anxiety than our jobs.

Pressing deadlines, quarterly goals, late nights and irritating and overbearing office dwellers are just some of the work-related factors that cause mental and emotional strain.

The American Psychological Association says major stressors include “excessive workloads,” “work that isn’t engaging or challenging” and “not having enough control over job-related decisions.”

Don’t worry, though; the APA offers ways for dealing with workplace heebie-jeebies, including:

  • Keeping track of what is causing you stress
  • Separating your work and home life
  • Taking breaks, whether that means daily digital breaks or making sure you use all your vacation days
