How would the world change if prairie dogs spontaneously became super-intelligent, but only the French knew about it?

Thanks for the A2A, Scott. I appreciate that you created this question to test my fascination for speculative fiction, even though the scenario is quite far-fetched (to say the least) :-).

The first thing we have to ask ourselves what prairie dogs would do, if they would become super intelligent. They are herbivorous creatures who love to dig holes. They have to, because the areas where they live can be quite warm and quite cold. With their new-found intelligence, they would certainly build massive underground cities, with all the comfort a prairie dog would nee.

Of course, they would keep the entrances to their cities hidden, to avoid any chance of being discovered. They would live peaceful lives for decades, until they would discover religion. Some of the prairie dogs would turn into fanatic religious warriors, who'd want their own "prairean state".

So the authorities respond by building warfare. They even toy with the idea to build atomic bombs to finish the PS once and for all. But how would they know they could safely deploy such weapons without risking the lives of all the other noble prairie dogs? Obviously they would have to test it, somewhere far away from home. And this is how the French would know about it:

Gerard Depardieu!

I mean: obviously the prairie dogs wouldn't give a damn about Gerard Depardieu because after he traded in his French citizenship for a Russian citizenship, nobody does. So they plan to test their nuclear bomb in a theater in Paris, where Depardieu is performing in a play. But little do they know that the play is attended by another famous Frenchman:

Jean Reno

Of course, Jean Reno immediately senses that they are all in danger, because he's bad ass like that. He manages to find and disable to nuclear bomb (again: bad ass) and he shows it to a surprised Depardieu. When they find out that the bomb was made in the USA, they get recruited by the French intelligence service to infiltrate the US and find out the source of the threat.

As they travel the country, they discover all these little holes in the desert. They manage to find a hole big enough to enter one of the huge underground prairie dog cities and they see the civilization that's going on there. But what a civilization it is. The prairie dogs are all fighting each other over whose prairie god is best.

The decide that they can't let this risk to humanity continue to go on, so they enlist the help of some veteran action heroes who love the opportunity to feel the action one more time.

And even though the prairie dogs are super intelligent, they are no match for the combined powers of Stallone and his guys. The last that we see of the prairie dogs is...

And then they all die.

So in conclusion, how does this change the world? Well, it doesn't, apart from one thing: Stallone had so much fun in his mission, that he decided to make a movie out of it. You guessed it: The Expendables!

So now you know that this movie is actually based on a huge prairie dog hunt that almost ended the world as we know it.

The end.
