You can’t just “come over” and make a life for you here.
Immigration in Iceland is VERY restrictive, for just about everyone outside the Nordic countries, especially North-Americans.
If you have a study place or a job literally waiting for you there, you won’t need Icelandic, as everyone and their sheep speaks English.
However, if you happen to be in this situation, learning Icelandic will definitively help as far as “belonging” goes.
But the biggest hurdles when it comes to living in Iceland is the immigration process, not the language.
