Yes, I think he is, although of course he will never admit it.
He certainly should be.
He is showing early signs of wanting to back out of their planned debates. He will gin up some other reasons for doing so. I don’t know whether he will be able to get away with it or not; he certainly has shown an ability to get away with all kinds of behavior no previous major party candidate / nominee has ever gotten away with.
If he does manage to avoid debating her, it will not help him. It will not impress the undecided middle part of the electorate. It will reinforce in her advocates their antipathy and contempt for him, and it may even plant a doubt or two among some of his more casual supporters.
He has good reason to be afraid. If he does debate her, he will almost certainly fly off the handle more than once, reminding the undecided just how temperamentally unsuited he is to occupy the Oval Office.
