For the most part I would say no. Becoming a grandmaster is so common these days that your life will not be any different from that of any other chess player. That is, unless you’re one of the very few elite grandmasters who can make it as a top professional. But that’s a small group of players who can consistently maintain above-2700 ratings, and they only account for about 2 % of all GMs.
Becoming a GM is hard. Tremendously hard. It’s probably on a par with winning an olympic gold medal. Yet there is little to gain in terms of money for 98 % of GMs. So is it worth it? Only if you are willing to dedicate your life to the game out of mere intellectual interest.
