Is there a better way than democracy?

Yes, but first we need a post-scarcity society, as in the original Star Trek. We also need to reduce the population to something sensible.

Once we get to a point at which we no longer have to fight each other for resources, and everybody has plenty of room, I think democratic republican government as we know it will fade away and be replaced by a system of managers. These managers will be largely unknown and selected for the job because of their psychological aptitude. Anyone who wants to exercise power for its own sake will be excluded. The managers will be responsible for taking care of the planet and all life on it, and making sure there aren’t any catastrophes (except natural ones).

The managers will in effect be like air traffic control is now. Nobody really knows exactly who they are, and it doesn’t matter. Their job is to ensure that the aircraft get safely from place to place. They’re good at dealing with emergencies. People who are into it for the power of ordering pilots around aren’t allowed to do the job. They don’t tell anybody where to go in the large sense; they just ensure that the skies are shared fairly among the aircraft, and prevent traffic jams and collisions. They are always courteous and professional.

Imagine what the world would be like if it were run by people who had the quiet competence, humility, and dedication to the common good that air traffic controllers have now!
