What did Timothy Treadwell do wrong after years of close contact with bears (to have been killed by one)?

Normalization of risk, combined with a healthy dose of stupidity.

Bears are dangerous creatures. Most of the time, they won’t fuck with you, because they have better things to do, and don’t see you as a threat.

Most of the time.

Timothy Treadwell forgot that part.

Brown bear, in particular, are apex predators. They can and will kill. They should be treated with the same caution that one treats a bunch of old nitroglycerine. Dangerous, and unpredictable. Brown bears rarely engage in predatory hunting of humans, but they can in the right conditions.

Timothy Treadwell virtually set the table, put himself and Amie Huguenard on the buffet line, and handed the bears a silverware set to make sure the conditions were right.

For his trouble, he got himself killed, killed an innocent person, and caused two bears to be killed.

Good going for a guy who wanted to protect those bears.

In case it’s not clear, I have zero respect for that punk.
