I have owned both breeds. I had a beloved black lab growing up and I now own a golden. They are very similar dogs, in relation to size and temperament.
I prefer golden retrievers.
Because of their fur. Lab fur is short and very coarse. It sheds like crazy and is difficult to vacuum up. It gets lodged into fabric. Golden fur is very soft, much more pleasant to pet. The fur vacuums up very easily (though they also shed like crazy).
I also think goldens are much calmer than labs. Especially as puppies. Labs have a lot of enthusiasm for life, which is endearing but also exhausting! My golden loves to play but while he is hanging around the house he is very mellow.
I also just prefer the look of the golden better. Both are beautiful dogs, but I mean- have seen a more gorgeous dog?
