What is the minimum that a well-educated layperson should know about your professional or academic field?

Computer Scientists write software and prove theorems regarding algorithms.

Computer Engineers design computer hardware or write low-level software that interfaces with hardware. CE majors have also been known to write regular software and prove theorems regarding algorithms.

Electrical Engineers can do anything ranging from power delivery systems to solid state to computer hardware design to writing low-level software that interfaces with hardware (depending on area of concentration). EE majors have also been known to write regular software and prove theorems regarding algorithms.

Sometimes people majoring in any of these fields will decide to work in finance (investment banking, quant, HFT). This is generally considered to be selling out or incompetence, especially since many jobs in Silicon Valley now pay much better than finance jobs. For example, one of my friends was offered <70K for a Quant job at Chase and Morgan Stanley in NYC... wtf?

As always, there are exceptions to the norm.
