But one day I had a migraine, no meds, and was completely broke until the next day. I managed to stagger across the street to the gas station, and I begged the clerk to let me have one of the little single dose packets of Advil Sinus they sold there. I could pay him back tomorrow, I said.
He shoved a bottle into my hand and told me to get home. I thanked him and managed to avoid getting flattened running across the street. I couldn't even read the bottle because the position was so intense, so I just took two of whatever was in it and lay down and passed out almost immediately.
Three hours later I woke up. The pain was gone and I felt almost normal again. I found the bottle where I dropped it and read the label. "Excedrin Migraine." Well no wonder it worked.
Of course I went in the next day to thank the clerk and ask him what I owed. He just smiled and said that I must be mistaken. After all, there was no inventory missing and I certainly didn't owe him anything.
It was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me.
