What's the most selfish thing you have ever seen?

I didn’t see this, but I was witness to the aftermath. The selfish act occurred in a trailer. Her husband wanted to go bowling with his team, as he did every Wednesday night. This Wednesday, the wife insisted he stay home. She had no particular reason. An argument ensued. He grabbed his keys and headed to the door. The wife really wanted him to stay home, she took out a butcher knife and stabbed him in the back right up to the hilt.

Change of scene. My comrades were settling in for a night of peace or chaos, you never knew when you worked emergency. The medics were sitting around talking when they stopped because the door opened and a late middle aged man came through, obviously a citizen of the good Alabama worker of the soil.

The medics stood up and watched this guy weave himself up to them. He was stumbling as if he was drunk. Then he smiled broadly and apologized for disrupting their time, but, he said, I have a little problem.

He turned around and there sticking out of his back was the butcher knife. One of my friends nearly feinted. They didn’t want to panic him in any way, so they asked him to sit on a stool. As he did, he laughed, and said, ‘have you ever tried to drive with a butcher knife in your back. I tell you, I had to lean way forward. It was hard to turn the wheel.

The medics nodded politely, but inside they were suffering. In a half hour the fellow was in surgery. It seemed his wife had placed the blade right up against the thumping heart and avoided all major arteries. He convalesced for a month and then was allowed to go home. My fellow medics called me out to watch the loving couple holding hands on their way out.
