Why do libertarians always say that their taxes are being taken "at gunpoint"?

You mustn't confuse the form of government with the scope of government. A Democracy, a Monarchy, an Oligarchy, a Theocracy, etc., can all be overbearing and intrusive into the lives of individuals. Or they can foster Liberty. The marginal advantage of democracy it permits 51% of the electorate to oppress the other 49%, while making it harder for 49% to oppress 51%. But democracy, by itself, brings no guarantees.

When a libertarian talks about taxes being taken at gunpoint, they mean that taxes are coerced payments, not voluntary, at least for a portion of the population. If not paid, the state can and does compel, up to the point of sending armed agents.
