Why is Theodore Roosevelt considered a badass?

Lots of reasons, but one will be enough to illustrate the point: On October 14, 1912 he was shot in the chest while campaigning. Correctly deducing that if he wasn't coughing up blood, the bullet had not penetrated the lung, he refused to go to the hospital. Instead he continued with his plans and delivered a 90-minute speech. He never had the bullet removed.
