Would you call Star Trek utopian or dystopian?

The Federation is utopian, at least in Roddenberry's original vision. Everybody has what they need and people work for the pleasure or challenge of doing work; it's what's called a post-scarcity society. Nobody has to fear being poor or unable to buy food or medicine or having a place to live. Men and women, people of all races, and even aliens, serve alongside each other. In 1966, this was extremely radical. Charles Schulz couldn't even introduce a black character to the Peanuts comic strip in 1968 without getting complaints from white newspaper editors.

Of course, most of the adventures of the Enterprise took place outside this utopia where there were still conflicts and problems to solve.

The only way it can be seen as dystopia is if you don't like peace, freedom, and plenty.
