They are remembering when a well-intentioned guy named Ralph Nader siphoned off just enough to votes to ensure that our President ended up being George W. Bush. They are thinking that there is a Supreme Court seat to fill next January and they’d rather not have Trump fill it. They know that the only role Johnson can play in the US electoral system is spoiler. And in 2016, that spoiler can leave us a lot worse off than Ralph Nader did in 2000. That’s saying quite a lot.
