The one time it ever really gobsmacked me and I still remember, was when I was told I was too old to be in a bar serving alcohol. You read that right. I was all of an ancient 34 years old.
I was out with a group of coworkers for a birthday thing. The age range of the group was 25–38, about 10–15 people. They decided to go to this one club (which despite multiple fines for underaged drinking somehow remains in business and still has a liquor license).
We went in in two groups, from having to find parking. My group mostly got in, then my turn in line came in. The bouncer asked for my college ID, not the state issued ID. When I replied I didn’t have one because I wasn’t in college, he loudly declared I was too old to drink in their bar. I asked if he wasn’t confused, since the state legal age to even be in a bar was 21, and college IDs aren’t considered valid ID with the liquor board. He informed me it was a college bar despite not being on campus, and they only accepted college IDs. Ironic since the bouncer/door guy was in his 40’s, if he was lucky. He didn’t seem too happy when all of my group left and asked for the door money back, though he gave it to us when we asked to speak to the manager.
Though since I was so obviously much older and more mature, my group took our money and business elsewhere. After I stopped to tell the cop on the street about the ID policy of the bar. Yeah, they did get busted that night.
