Which person is more useful to humanity: one who develops difficult mathematical theorems or someone who helps the poor?

In the 19th century a German mathematician named Bernhard Riemann extended the differential geometry of surfaces to [math]n[/math] dimensions. In the 20h century, Einstein used Riemannian geometry to formulate his theory of General Relativity, which is necessary for the functioning of GPS.

Also in the 19th century, the mathematician George Boole developed Boolean algebra, which formed the backbone of computer science.

Neither of these mathematicians was concerned about specific applications; both developed these fields purely to enhance our understanding of logic and mathematics (and Einstein developed GR to further develop our understanding of physics)., but their eventual application has had a PROFOUND effect on our quality of life and development of our technology.

Moral of the story: the quest for a deeper understanding of math and science often leads to very tangible benefits. It is complementary to those great people who dedicate their lives to helping the less fortunate.
