There is this phrase in the world of spirituality that says, “If you are trying to become more mindful, you are missing the purpose of mindfulness—because mindfulness is free of ‘wanting’ to begin with.”
I find the same applies to the concept of failure. As much as I have tried the Alden Tan approach (which was helpful at first) of just saying “Fuck it,” in the end, it doesn’t fix the real issue.
The real issue is that failure doesn’t actually exist.
It is made up.
Nothing extra happens if you “fail.”
Everything is a lesson—it’s not a mistake. It’s not a “failure.” It is a lesson.
Sometimes, lessons take 1 time to learn.
Sometimes they take 87 times to learn.
Sometimes they take a lifetime.
But it is always a lesson. Not a failure.
Instead of spending more time trying to “convince” yourself that it’s ok to “fail,” spend time practicing and reinforcing in yourself the belief that everything is a lesson. Some lessons are tough. Some lessons are easy. Some lessons make you feel shitty. Some lessons make you feel fantastic. But they are all lessons that help propel you forward on YOUR path. Not your career path. Not your financial path. Your LIFE path, from which all other paths emerge.
There is no failure.
Only lessons.
