When I was about 8-years-old, my dad tried to help a woman “that needed help”. She lived in a wooden shipping crate in a big field along with her 8 goats, that she kept for milk and warmth “when it was cold”.
My dad gave her food, and blankets, and took her for medical care (and also paid for it out of his own pocket) once when she suffered from pneumonia.
He’d check in on her about once a week.
Then a sudden cold snap hit her.
We went to check on her, and found her dead.
The Pathologist said that he didn’t know exactly the cause of death: But she either died due to hypothermia, or starved to death.
When the County was clearing out the lot and removing her things, they found over $100,000 in her belongings. (For a reference: If I recall correctly, our 3 bedroom house on a corner lot cost $12,000.)
All these years later, it still troubles me to think of how she died, in such a tragic way, with that “fortune” literally at her fingertips.
