Business leaders rebuke Trump for climate accord pullout

When you stand against the world, the world is likely to fire back.

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced his intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord, which seeks to unify member countries’ efforts to combat global warming.

The decision—which makes the U.S. one of a scant few abstaining from the global endeavor—was met with great resistance from progressives, members of his own administration, and some of the world’s most visible business leaders.

Perhaps most notably, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that he would step down from the presidential advisory councils to which he belonged.

Disney CEO Bob Iger followed suit:

On Wednesday, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff shared a letter to Trump that leaders from 25 companies—including Apple, Facebook and Google—had signed, urging the president not to withdraw the United States from the agreement:

Those companies expressed their disappointment after Trump announced his decision.

General Electric chief Jeff Immelt also voiced his displeasure with Trump’s unilateral action.

Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein used his first-ever tweet to express his disdain for Trump’s decision:

Apple CEO Tim Cook called the move “wrong for our planet”:

Officials in several major cities—including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Salt Lake City—have said they would adhere to the agreement. Governors from Washington, New York and California said they each would launch a state-driven alliance adhering to the Paris deal.

The mayor of Pittsburgh, which Trump mentioned in his speech when he told the Rose Garden crowd that he represented the people of that city and not those of Paris, said the Pennsylvania city would adhere to the accord .
