What's a cool thing you ‘invented’ as a kid, only to find it had already been invented?

I was 11, in the physics class, the teacher explained electromagnetism principles and how electric energy is generated when we rotate a piece of magnet inside a copper coil. I was fascinated and instantly thought about car engines that rotate permanently when started, I said to myself “it can have a piece of magnet stuck to the rotating part inside a copper coil and generate electricity to feed car lights and radio instead of sucking energy from the car battery” (my that time understanding). I had just invented the “alternator”, I didn’t knew how to call it yet.

The funny part is that I didn’t want to disclose my invention to the teacher or anyone else so nobody steal it and started to do research on cars electricity in the public library.

I neglected all school subjects and leisure, I was too absorbed by “my invention” that my mother started to worry …

About a month later, I discovered that “my invention” was already invented, I was devastated, disappointed ! I was looking at alternators schematics and photos and said “it is exactly how I wanted to build it”

It was a very good experience.

My father told me, “if you thought inventing something that someone else invented before, it means you are thinking the right way and if you continue to study well at school, you may invent something for real”
