I worked in Ealing for several months back in the late 90s. As was customary back then (probably still is) the whole office left at 1:00 to go down to the pub for lunch. They drank beer (occasionally wine or even Scotch and Coke) with lunch! To an American this seemed quite British. But not the most British thing ever.
One day one of the gals from the office ordered something that I didn’t catch the name of. What came out was a sandwich made of thick cut white bread inside which was a pile of freshly fried chips (thick French fries) smothered in mayonnaise!
Ladles and gentiemen, I present the most British thing ever, the Chip Butty:
She said just before taking the first bite, “Guess I’ll have to go to the gym soon.”
