Are liberals so comfortable with the idea of Mike Pence as president that they want to impeach President Trump?

If Trump gets impeached, and thrown out of office, then Mike Pence is in a tricky position. He rode into office on Trump’s coat tails. If Trump is unfit for the Presidency, then Mike Pence cannot simply take over where he left off. Trump was bizarrely successful, despite his unpopularity. Mike Pence is unlikely to have that advantage. If he wants to make his own run for the Presidency after finishing Trump’s term, he cannot follow Trump’s lead too closely. Trump is widely hated. Trump lost the popular vote by a huge margin. If Trump is thrown out of office, that’s a bad role model for the next President.

Under those circumstances, Pence would be weakened by Trump’s unpopularity and by his legacy. Congress would be wary of following him for fear of their own political futures. If he talks about immigration, or trade, or the Middle East, Democrats will jump on him. “That’s what the criminal Trump said.”
