Until I was 17, I thought this was normal. I was waving to someone at a basketball game and someone said, “"What is WRONG with you?”
I'm in my 50s and I recently found out I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), which is a genetic disorder affecting connective tissue. I always thought I just had loose joints. Which sometimes popped out. I read about it several years ago and thought… “Nah. That's not me.”
Apparently there are several types. The most severe types, which are fairly rare, can involve organ failure. I have hypermobilty type, which can be painful but isn't life threatening. I do bruise very easily and often have no idea what caused any given bruise. The Ehlers Danlos Society says it affects 1 in 2,500 to 1 in 5,000 people, but I would guess it’s under-diagnosed because many health professionals are unaware of it.
