Okay, this is going to sound horrible, but with one notable exception [1] I have a typical reaction to character deaths, whether I like the character or not (often especially if I like them) and I did it when I got to that part. I vaguely recall being spoiled about it, though I’m not sure (it’s been a long time) but when I got to the end of the chapter, I laughed.
Yes, I realize that sounds awful. I mean no disrespect to Bob Salvatore, to the character, to Peter Mayhew, to Chewbacca fans, it’s just my reaction to character deaths that really get me. I think it’s kind of a “you really did it” response. I didn’t think it was a terrible thing to do; I was one who was okay with the notion of killing characters because after a while it had gotten stale—we knew who’d live, even when it flew in the face of logic, though this was before NJO and following books turned everything into a bloodbath, sometimes it seemed with spite-targeting of characters from popular authors not involved in the current projects (did Pellaeon and Mara REALLY have to die?) I thought it was handled reasonably well, Han’s reaction made sense. I definitely don’t think that Salvatore deserved the crap he got from some fans over it.
[1] The notable exception is also Star Wars. I threw The Last Command at the wall.
