How to craft great corporate stories

No matter what line of work you’re in, stories can boost your business.

An infographic from Gagen MacDonald offers guidance on how to unlock the power of storytelling. To “craft an amazing story” for your company, the graphic says to:

  • Go beyond dollars and cents
  • Touch employees’ emotions
  • Offer a compelling rationale for change
  • Tap the company’s brand, culture, vision and history
  • Engage your colleagues with sensory details and vivid metaphors, which activate brain areas associated with focus and retention

To cultivate storytelling from within, the infographic stresses tapping respected internal ambassadors who can promote and reinforce your message. Ideally, that message should magnify how integral employees are to the larger corporate narrative—and sing their praises as much as possible.

Recognizing workers improves collaboration, engagement, retention and productivity, and securing staffers’ buy-in carries heft in the digital realm as well. Gagen MacDonald cites a statistic that “employee social shares reach 20 times more people than equivalent brand shares.” Employees’ complaints can do equally far-reaching damage, of course, so it’s important to keep your team happy.

Finally, to create “knockout campaigns,” visual content is essential. The infographic says visually driven stories are “45 percent more memorable” and can “improve comprehension up to 400 percent.”

Great stories don’t tell themselves. Superb storytelling requires time, strategy and a slice of the budget pie. Are you allocating enough resources to uncovering and conveying the narratives that can make your company shine?

Review the infographic below if you—or your bosses—need convincing that compelling stories are worth the investment.
