- Those that the U.S. causes
- Those that the U.S. electively joins
- Those that the U.S. is involuntarily drawn into
- Those that the U.S. is not involved in
- Those that the U.S. is not involved in fighting, but we sell arms to one or both sides.
- Those that the U.S. is not involved in fighting, but where we broker peace.
- Those that never happen because the military and economic strength the U.S. projects.
If libertarian views held sway today, some of these kinds of wars would disappear or vastly diminish, namely 1 and 2. To the extent some cases of 3 are indirectly causes by previous instances of 1 and 2 those would diminish as well. Causes 4, 5 and 6 would not change much. 7, the wars prevented, might benefit as well, due to the stronger economy and the emphasis on free trade. Since war, even overseas, is bad for business, you would expect Americans to focus on being super-diplomats. It is just good business.
