Sometimes consumers want what isn’t necessary “good for them.”
Despite the potential adverse health effects linked to aspartame, Diet Pepsi is introducing a version of its product that contains the controversial artificial sweetener.
Roughly a year ago, brand managers announced they’d replace aspartame with sucralose and emblazoned their cans with the phrase, “Now Aspartame Free.”
It seems that Diet Pepsi drinkers greatly preferred the taste of aspartame because shortly after the switch, The Wall Street Journal reported that Diet Pepsi sales fell more than 10 percent in first quarter 2016.
"For those consumers who love Diet Pepsi with aspartame, we have been exploring ways to make it available,” a Pepsi statement read.
The result of which will be Diet Pepsi Classic Sweetener Blend.

"Consumers want choice in diet colas, so we're refreshing our U.S. lineup to provide three options that meet differing needs and taste preferences," the statement continued. “The third option is Pepsi Zero Sugar, formerly known as Pepsi Max.”
Studies on aspartame risks are varied. Some link the substance to genetic damage and cancer, and others have completely ruled out such risks, including a 2013 study from the European Food and Safety Association.
