What was the damage to science done by Hurricane Sandy?

One of the greatest losses was that of the rat and mouse lines at New York University's research center.  These lines were at the heart of research on heart disease, cancer and mental disorders like autism and schizophrenia at NYU.

It was estimated that 10,000 rats and mice were lost which was the culmination of 10 years of research.  The mouse lines included 40 genetic variants.  It will take a long time to replace all of these lines and get back on track with the research. [1]
