Many people, including J.J. Abrams and film critics, thought Lupita Noyong'o did a great job as Maz Kanata.
The reason many of her scenes were cut is that Abrams originally planned to have her join Han Solo and Finn to rescue Rey from the Starkiller Base. However, during the editing process, Abrams decided to cut those scenes because the character didn't have anything to do once she got there. The cuts didn't have anything to do with Lupita Noyong'o's acting ability.
