The show was over. All in attendance had endured a modified experience of the play through no fault of the cast, the producers or the theater. It was, in fact members of the audience who had booed Mike Pence. It was Mike Pence who had brought about the inconvenience of ingress to the theater, as a result of the government SUV’s and the ambulance just outside the theater.
For the cast to speak at that point, with the prepared words was entirely appropriate. The timing was exactly when, on many occasions, a cast has stepped out of character, to speak as people. Less than a month prior to this, I was at a completely different performance on a stage in another city, where the end of the program was used, in that case, to acknowledge a departing member of the cast. In that case, it was a comedy improvisation troop. Nobody asked for their money back.
So the timing of the comment, after the end, was normal. And some comment about the special difference in the show was entirely appropriate.
What was said found a fair balance of both respect for Pence and acknowledgement of the concerns of that portion of the audience that had expressed their emotions and opinions.
It would do a great harm to this nation if our leaders lived lives in a protected bubble, never exposed to the emotions and concerns of the people. Managed by doting Potemkins preserving an illusion that all is happy and well for the people
