Some of mine:
- Self-righteousness over trivia. What? You aren’t using the expensive French organic mustard? You are a spawn of the devil.
- “First World” whiners, and entitlement in general. “Hey, I had to wait an extra fifty milliseconds for my seven-dollar latte! The world is ending…”
- People who think that a snarky comment is actually an argument - and think that because their opponent left the discussion that they somehow “won”. More typically they left in disgust…
- Inferring one’s “political tribe” based on a single datapoint. Oh, your take is X? You therefore believe Y, Z, and W, and are obviously a loathsome human being. I dislike this when done to individuals or to groups; humans are in general far more interesting than “tribalists” give them credit for.
- Hypocrites of various types. “We installed solar panels on our 4000 square foot home and are doing our part to save the earth. Oh, and let’s talk about our sixth trip to Europe this year!”
- Pretentiousness.
- Moral narcissism. “Hey, I support all the right causes, so I get to be a complete jerk in all other aspects of my life.”
- Conspiracy theorists. “Are you really, really, really sure they landed on the Moon? Maybe they found Elvis, the ‘real’ 9/11 bombers, and JFK’s second shooter there?”
I am guilty of some of these at times, but it’s always easier to see flaws in others than in yourself…
