In Deathly Hallows, Hermione points out to Ron that both she and Harry were raised by Muggles and missed out on the stories of Beedle the Bard. Both she and Harry are deeply attracted to the entire Weasley clan, and marry into it, giving them each the foundation they crave. Harry and Hermione both feel a little displaced in the wizarding world because of their backgrounds and feel a brother-sister type bond with each other - nothing romantic. Hermione approached Ron and Harry very early on in book 1, on the Hogwarts Express, in fact, and continued to try to befriend them, even after Ron hurt her feelings. I think she just must have thought Ron was cute and wanted to hang out with him. Ron just took a while to catch on.
