I stopped listening to classical music.
It began one day when the Beethoven 7th Symphony ended, the room was quiet, and I heard my baby crying in her room. I rushed in; she was OK, just with a wet diaper. But I hadn’t heard her! How long had she been crying? I had no way to know.
I stopped listening to classical music at home, at least, at any time when there was a baby sleeping nearby. I could listen at concerts, in my car, at work … but not in the evenings at home. I never wanted to miss my baby’s call for help again.
A few years ago I was telling someone this story, and I realized that there was no longer a reason to continue my abstinence. What joy! Once again music at home has become a wonderful pleasure. But I’ve never regretted my decision.
