Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York stole headlines again this week as the New York Post revealed another sexting scandal.
This is the third time Weiner has found himself involved in this scenario. The first ended his congressional career in 2011. The second drew a close to his campaign for New York mayor in 2013.
Huma Abedin, Weiner’s wife and a top aide for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, announced in a statement that she and Wiener would separate:
After long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband. Anthony and I remain devoted to doing what is best for our son, who is the light of our life. During this difficult time, I ask for respect for our privacy.
Weiner most recently exchanged racy texts with a woman the Post described as a “40-something divorcee” and “a self-avowed supporter of Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association who’s used Twitter to bash both President Obama and Clinton.”

The politics
The story was immediately injected into the national presidential campaign. Clinton rival Donald Trump released a statement on Monday, which tied Weiner’s incessant sexting to national security:
I only worry for the country in that Hillary Clinton was careless and negligent in allowing Weiner to have such close proximity to highly classified information. Who knows what he learned and who he told? It’s just another example of Hillary Clinton’s bad judgment.
The fallout continued for Weiner as NY1 announced that he was “on indefinite leave from the station” where he had been a frequent contributor on its “Inside City Hall” show.
The Daily News also announced that it would no longer publish Weiner’s columns.
The response
Twitter users continue to debate whether the scandal should be part of the presidential discourse—and to what degree:
The problem for Clinton team - after Democrats repeatedly pointed to Bannon personal past, going to be hard to argue Weiner is off limits

No, @NYT, Weiner’s sexts do not cast a cloud over the Clinton campaign. That’s absurd.

(Image via)4. The Weiner story is not a story about any woman. Not Hillary. Not Huma. Not any woman. https://t.co/WgU7sgdtgG
