Governor Kasich is currently the most electable Republican who ran in 2016. Hillary Clinton —whom I support— should count her blessings that the GOP has made a beeline for total destruction this year and nominated Trump. It’s not like I’m saying Clinton couldn’t have won (I think she could have), it’s just that Kasich has three things that really would have made it challenging for her:
- The GOP has relentlessly attacked Clinton’s credibility and while I think it’s generally baseless nonsense, it has been effective for a segment of the nation and there is no equal counter-attack against Kasich other than partisan bickering (his stance on abortion, etc.).
- Kasich is from Ohio, a vital, VITAL state in this year’s election and he is a popular governor who has a statewide mechanism that would make winning this state so incredibly challenging that he would be all but guaranteed a November victory.
- Kasich isn’t a psychopathic asshole who spouts the most horrific nonsense that can be used against him. Regardless of your opinion of him (mine fluctuates but plummeted after his pathetic comments on abortion), he’s genuinely seen a really nice guy. That image has political cachet.
It’s interesting that Trump shot himself in the foot with Kasich. It turns out that the Trumpster Fire & Co. wanted Kasich because they knew what a great running mate he would’ve been and yet because Trump is such a vile human being, even Kasich steered clear of that candidacy. Telling.
