Assuming a hard smack on the head isn’t an option…
I’ve always found that the best response to this argument is asking them why this logic does not apply to any other of our Constitutional rights. If the 2nd Amendment only applies to muskets, does the 1st Amendment only apply to manual printing presses and not modern newspapers or the internet? Does the protection against search and seizure only apply to handwritten letters and not to computers or email accounts?
When they try to shift the topic away, as they inevitably do, insist on dragging them back to your original question. Demand that they answer why this logic must be applied to the 2nd Amendment but not to any other part of the Constitution.
